In March 2024, a massive data breach was discovered at China UnionPay, the countrys largest payment network. The breach resulted in the exposure of personal and financial information of 637,873,101 individuals, making it one of the largest data leaks in history.
The leaked data included names, ID numbers, credit and debit card details, transaction histories, and more. The breach was discovered by a security researcher who notified UnionPay and the authorities. UnionPay confirmed the breach and launched an investigation, but the full extent of the damage is still unknown
